Welcome to the sixth 2017 installment of “Set Piece”, the Southington High School Soccer team’s blog spot.
Blue Knight’s on the Pitch: A Look Back and a Look Forward
Southington started their week with an away match at Northwest Catholic on Monday. The Blue Knights played with energy right from the beginning of the game. Their hard work was rewarded when Eli Rodriguez scored a goal mid-way through the first half to give Southington 1-0 lead. The first half ended with Southington leading 1-0. Northwest Catholic began the second-half creating chances in the Blue Knights half of the field and finally broke through to tie the game 15 minutes into the second half at 1-1. The teams played evenly until Southington used some nice passing to find Eli Rodriguez free once again for the 2-1 lead. For the remainder of the half, the Southington defense stepped up significantly to close out the game for a 2-1 Southington victory.
On Friday, Southington hosted Bristol Central for the annual United Way game. The Blue Knights played the first half aggressively creating a number of chances but could not find the back of the net. The first half was played to an even draw at 0-0. For roughly 35 minutes of the second half, the game remained even without a score. Finally, Kieran Tindall used some nifty passing to create an opportunity that Colin Burdette finished for a 1-0 Blue Knights lead. A short time later, Hayden Burbank took matters into his own hands working the ball into position and firing a shot that gave Southington a 2-0 lead. John Griffin closed out the game for the shutout and a 2-0 Blue Knights victory.
The Blue Knights ended a very productive week with two much needed wins to push their record to 3-4-2.
